7/8/2023 0 Comments Sabriel lirael abhorsenCandles were out because they would not be very dramatic and also highly impractical (at least so I thought back then, I have since considered ways they could work). Books were out, because I wanted something different from books of spells. Possibly the most famous form of exorcism is ‘by bell, book and candle’. The first was that I was trying to think up a kind of magic that was a bit different to that normally encountered in fantasy fiction, and as it was to be used by the Abhorsens I was looking into folklore about exorcising evil spirits and so on. However, in the case of the bells that necromancers and the Abhorsens use, I think there were two points of inspiration. It’s always difficult to work out where particular ideas come from. Why did you choose bells as the tools of necromantic magic?

But when Annarsquo s plan is revealed, a bit of blackmail is thrown into the mix, a proposal is rejected and even the Earl himself will be unprepared for the intrigues that ensnare them. Except for the mysterious lady with whom he spent two unforgettable nights at Aphroditersquo s Grotto, the most scandalous brothel in London. Unhandsome, he knows that no woman wants him. He is formalising his betrothal and trying with little success to forget about a secretary that has no right being female. But the Earl has another reason for going to London. But when she realises that he is going to visit a brothel in London to take care of his ‘manly’ desires, Anna sees red and decides to take advantage of the opportunity to also take care of her ‘womanly’ desires with the Earl as her unknowing lover. Secretaries are always male never female as Anna well knows but the real downfall of her career is the realisation that she is falling in love with Edward de Raaf the Earl. For the widowed Anna Wren, that means taking a job as female secretary for the Earl of Swartingham. There comes a time in a womanrsquo s life when she must do the unthinkable and find employment. 7/8/2023 0 Comments Please excuse vera dietzIt is incredibly well done! To enter simply leave a comment with you email address. I am giving away my audiobook of Please Ignore Vera Dietz. It is brave and beautiful and wonderful and wise. Thank you for teaching teens (and really anyone who reads the book) the importance of forgiving themselves, of moving on after mistakes, of not letting one mistake be an excuse to make more and more. Thank you for making me laugh in the midst of my tears. They make mistakes and hold grudges and doubt themselves and others and are in general real. Thank you for authentic characters, teenaged and otherwise. Somethings are always wrong and should always be addressed. None of this “It’s none of our business” or “It wouldn’t help” or “You can’t help people who don’t ask for it” or “It’s just the way things are sometimes” crap. It put me through the wringer to read it. I’ll bet it wasn’t easy to do what you did. Thank you for writing a book that doesn’t ignore the issue. Should I start by telling you that I think this book should be required reading for every teacher and high school student? Perhaps I should lead with the fact that Please Ignore Vera Dietz got to me on a level that most books don’t? Maybe I should tell you that I was listening to it in the car and had to pull off at a gas station because I was crying so hard? Or I could just start with this: Thank you, A.S. My Thoughts: I’ve tried to start this review about five times already. Edgy and gripping, Please Ignore Vera Dietz is an unforgettable novel: smart, funny, dramatic, and always surprising. 7/8/2023 0 Comments Hate List by Jennifer BrownAlthough Nick's actions cannot be justified, I feel as though he was an extremely vulnerable individual that cracked after suffering years of abuse at the hands of those in the 'inner circle'. It almost seems expected by those around her that she should hate Nick, but no one takes a second to realise that they were in love, and that is something that doesn't die within a few months. She was always prone to second guessing herself, never certain if she somehow indirectly coerced Nick into doing what he did, but at the same time battling with her feelings for him. I honestly felt for Valerie throughout the whole book. The list she and Nick made of people they hated. The novel follows the character of Valerie as she returns to school, five months after her boyfriend, Nick, opened fire on their school cafeteria, killing and injuring many of their fellow students.Īlthough Valerie herself was injured defending another student, she is still somewhat implicated because of the list. 7/7/2023 0 Comments Under the skin isserleyOther Voices Student Stories LIBRARIANS & EDUCATORS' STORIES ARTIST SPOTLIGHT Creative Works HUMANITIES SCHOLARS LIBRARIES GLOBAL WARMING & SUSTAINABILITY RAISING VOICES OF COLOR LGBTQ+ VOICES NATIVE AMERICAN & INDIGENOUS VOICES INTERNATIONAL VOICES DANCE Submit Your Creative Works Submit Your Creative Works (LOVE) Young Artists & Writers.21 CHANNELS ARTS, CULTURE & SOCIETY CLIMATE CHANGE + SUSTAINABILITY BOOKS & WRITERS FILM & TV PHILOSOPHY & IDEAS SPIRITUALITY & MINDFULNESS SOCIAL JUSTICE & ACTIVISM EDUCATION ART MUSIC & DANCE THEATRE POETRY LGBTQ+STORIES FEMINISM & WOMEN’S STORIES ONE PLANET> CLIMATE CHANGE & BIODIVERSITY TECHNOLOGY & INNOVATION FUTURE CITIES STORIES POEMS MUSIC LOVE - What is love? Readers did nominate them, but the judges felt uncomfortable debating the inclusion of their own work - so it's up to me to tell you to find and read their excellent books! I personally, as a gigantic horror wuss, owe a debt of gratitude to this year's judges, particularly Hendrix, for their help writing summaries for all the list entries. One thing you won't see on the list is any work from this year's judges, Stephen Graham Jones, Ruthanna Emrys, Tananarive Due and Grady Hendrix. 100 Best Books Happy Ever After: 100 Swoon-Worthy Romances 7/7/2023 0 Comments Sjukdomen by Jonas GardellJonas Gardell is a Swedish author, screenwriter, and comedian If you find inaccuracies, you can request we run a fact check here or highlight specific content to report it. By forgiving ourselves, we can unburden ourselves from the past and move forward with greater self-awareness and appreciation for who we are. Overall, the song's message is one of self-love and compassion. It is a gentle reminder that in order to move forward, we need to forgive ourselves and embrace our entire selves, with all of our imperfections and complexities. By acknowledging these different parts and aspects, the song encourages self-forgiveness and self-acceptance. The lyrics then delve into the different aspects of ourselves that we may struggle with - the things we hate, love, are proud of, ashamed of, want to hide, or show off. It starts with the repetition of a soft, humming sound, which creates a sense of introspection and reflection. The song encourages us to forgive ourselves for all of these things and to accept ourselves as we are. The lyrics to Jonas Gardell's song "Förlåt Dig Själv" (Forgive Yourself) are a powerful reminder that we are all flawed human beings who make mistakes, have regrets, and carry both positive and negative aspects within ourselves. The author writes an easy to read and flowing tale of the new found freedoms experienced by tweens at a camp for kids that are not as able bodied as their peers, kids that wouldn't normally be able to have this freedom and experience. This could be read as a stand alone, but I think better read in sequence. It was some time ago, and there were a few references to her experience of attending a school competition where she was left behind by her peers, and the simple concept of not fitting in. This is a great story for young readers, and of course, readers like me that fell in love with Melody in book number one. She is gutsy, affable and very switched on. Melody is not even yet a teenager, but she is a very smart young woman. Just like every other kid that can do these things without a care in the world. It was so good to see Melody attend camp, just like all the other kids at school. There was some dispute about whether there could be any genuine philosophical questions that were not questions about language. Philosophy had for decades been relentlessly emphasising the nature of language (as opposed to, for example, the nature of reality, goodness or beauty). By then, everyone but a few reactionaries would have agreed with that assessment. But it aptly captures the flavour of academic philosophy at the time it appeared, which was also the year of Richard Rorty’s anthology The Linguistic Turn, which embodied an argument that the most important philosophy of the 20th century was linguistic philosophy. Like most everything Derrida said, this notorious declaration becomes more difficult to interpret as one examines its context and the context of its context. ‘There is nothing outside the text,’ wrote Jacques Derrida in 1967. 7/6/2023 0 Comments Rogue Moon by Algis Budrys(James Blish, to his credit as transcriber of Star Trek episodes, took on this question in his one original Trek novel, Spock Must Die! (1970).)Ī mysterious alien artifact has been found on the moon, and two men, one an introspective but determined scientist, the other a reckless daredevil, cooperate to discover a path through the labyrinth inside. Second is the consideration of the implications of a matter transmission device, an idea treated casually in most SF (especially in Star Trek), but that raises profound concerns about matters of the “soul” or, setting that notion aside, the consequences of simple duplication. First, humans deal with a kind of alien strangeness that cannot be comprehended, and which in this case is usually deadly. There are two central science fictional premises. The story also features two women, who use analogous means to get what they want. And while it deals with a fascinating mystery concerning an alien artifact, on the Moon, it’s also about the bureaucracy behind the scientists and engineers, and as much about how different kinds of men react differently to the challenges of life and the inevitability of death. It’s relatively short, even for SF novels of its era. (Click to enlarge)įawcett Gold Medal (176 pages, $0.35 paperback, 1960)Īlgis Budry’s 1960 novel Rogue Moon is an unusual book.
