6/30/2023 0 Comments The Sundog Season by John GeddesThe "stranger" arrives and he changes all their lives. "When I was five years old I wished for the death of another boy, prayed for it, and it happened." He lives in the tiny gold mining town of Spirit Lake in Northern Ontario, and is surrounded by a strong cast of supporting players: an older sister who may be more worldly than he imagines, an immigrant ice-maker for the hockey rink who lives on a tiny island, his less fortunate friend Mike, his pharmacist father, and some gossipy old ladies. The Sundog Season, by John Geddes is a wistful coming of age novel, deadly accurate in its portrayal of a 13-year-old small-town boy as he tries to make sense of the adult world that surrounds him.

6/30/2023 0 Comments A tale time beingNao is living on Tokyo at the dawn of the new millennium as she is keeping her journal. The central conceit of the novel is that it part of it takes the form of a journal written by a teenage girl named Naoko Yasutani-more familiarly referred to simply as Nao. And if you’re reading this, then maybe by now you’re wondering about me, too. As for me, right now I am sitting in a French maid café in Akiba Electricity Town, listening to a sad chanson that is playing sometime in your past, which is also my present, writing this and wondering about you, somewhere in my future. Do you know what a time being is? Well, if you give me a moment, I will tell you.Ī time being is someone who lives in time, and that means you, and me, and every one of us who is, or was, or ever will be. Young Cupcake learned to survive by turning tricks, downing hard liquor, partying like a rock star, and ingesting every drug she could find while hitchhiking up and down the California coast. Her gut-punch sense of humor and eye for the absurd, along with her outsized will, carry her through a fateful series of events that could easily have left her dead. As Cupcake's troubles grow, so do her voice and spirit. But there comes a point in her preteen years, maybe it's the night she first tries to run away and is exposed to drugs, alcohol, and sex all at once, when Cupcake's story shifts from a tear-jerking tragedy to a dark comic blues opera. It begins as the story of a girl orphaned twice over, once by the death of her mother and then again by a child welfare system that separated her from her stepfather and put her into the hands of an epically sadistic foster parent. This is the strange, heart-wrenching, and exhilarating tale of a woman named Cupcake. There are shelves of memoirs about overcoming the death of a parent, childhood abuse, rape, drug addiction, miscarriage, alcoholism, hustling, gangbanging, near-death injuries, drug dealing, prostitution, or homelessness.Ĭupcake Brown survived all these things before she'd even turned 20. 6/30/2023 0 Comments Caden bosch* Publishers Weekly, starred review *Shusterman does a masterful job.The intensity of living inside Caden's mind makes this a wrenching read. story turns symptoms into lived reality in ways readers won't easily forget.
